Even as the central government has asked states to develop micro-plans to tackle the predicted rise in vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria during the monsoon, Mumbai has witnessed its first confirmed dengue case this year. The city has so far also reported 11 suspected dengue case, as per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data.

Shahid Sayyed (18) has been suffering from high fever for the past few days. His family got him admitted to Maa Hospital in Chembur on July 8. It was confirmed from samples of his blood and urine that he had dengue.

Subsequently, he was rushed to Sion Hospital on July10 where he was admitted in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). Currently Shahid is on the ventilator.

While speaking to The Asian Age, Shahid’s uncle, Zuber Sayyed, said, “ We are tensed about his deteriorating condition. He was admitted to hospital just after Id. At present doctors are treating him, but as he is in the MICU, we are not allowed to see him. After his admission to Sion Hospitals, doctors confirmed that that he is suffering from dengue.”

Speaking about Shahid’s condition, Dr N.D. Moulik, head of department of medicine, Sion Hospital, said, “He came to us with around 27,000 platelets. He has developed some sort of complication. We are working on preventing hemorrhagic fever from hitting him.”

Doctor Suleman Merchant, dean of Sion Hospital, said, “His treatment is ongoing and we are making every effort to save the patient. It is a known fact that cases of dengue increase in the monsoon season.”
